Masters in Public Health


2006-09-07 to 2006-09-15

UWCs School of Public Health equips health professionals from all levels with the knowledge and skills to transform health and welfare in developing countries. Health professionals can gain credits and qualifications incrementally towards a Masters in Public Health starting with (in some cases) a Postgraduate Certificate in Public Health, or a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health. This flexible, modular programme offers optional contact sessions in Cape Town with distance learning modules and focuses on: Quantifying and prioritising health needs Design, implementation and evaluation of comprehensive Primary Health Care programmes Management of District Health Systems.

Postgraduate Certificate In Public Health
This one or two year programme provides a grounding in academic learning skills as well as in Public Health and Primary Health Care. It targets workers in the health and welfare services at local, district and regional levels. Entrance requirements: An undergraduate degree or diploma in any discipline or three years of relevant experience assessed by the university through a Recognition of Prior Learning process.

Postgraduate Diploma In Public Health
This one or two year programme provides in-depth training for health and welfare managers, supervisors, educators and researchers. Appropriate for local, district, provincial and national levels. Students are now able to specialise in Human Resources Development, Health Information Systems, Health Promotion, Health Systems Research, Health Management or Nutrition. Entrance requirements: An Honours Degree or its equivalent in any discipline, or in exceptional cases, five years of relevant experience assessed by the university through a Recognition of Prior Learning process.

Masters In Public Health (MPH)
The Masters programme consists of the Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health plus two elective modules and a mini-thesis. It may be taken over two to three years. It is designed for middle to senior managers, educators or researchers at district, provincial or national levels. All students enter at the PG diploma level. Entrance requirements: The Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health or its equivalent and relevant experience.
