Utilisation rate PHC

DefinitionNumber of visits per person to PHC health facilities per year. Calculated from PHC headcount divided by total population.

DEFINITION: The rate at which services are utilised by the target population, represented as the average number of visits per person per year in the target population. The denominator is Census-derived population estimates.

USE: To determine overall utilisation patterns, in particular relevant for the move towards equity in the health sector.

COMMENTS: Utilisation may depend on many things like accessibility, acceptably and appropriateness of services, as well as the legacy of apartheid with its gross inequity in resources and personnel.

National PHC models generally calculate a need for 3-3.5 visits per capita per year. The DHIS data is therefore roughly half the expected value for the full range of PHC services. Data extracted January 2003.
