Information Campaign to Empower Communities in Ekurhuleni

An information campaign hopes to empower communities in Ekurhuleni to be aware of responsible sexual practices.

The campaign will empower communities with information on how to lead healthy lifestyles and to practice safer sexual behaviour. Special focus will be placed on the prevention of morbidity and mortality from complications during pregnancy, teenage pregnancy, prevention, treatment and care of sexually transmitted infections and HIV and AIDS, said Ekurhuleni Municipality spokesperson Zweli Dlamini. He said activities would run throughout Ekurhuleni and target all groups of women, children, men and the youth. The Ekurhuleni Municipality in partnership with the Gauteng Health Department kicked off the month long campaign at the beginning of February. Some of the activities include promoting exercise and physical activity and abandoning habits that have a negative effect on people's health. 

Male sexual health will also be discussed with the aim of demystifying problems like erectile dysfunction. Mr Dlamini said that the month's activities kicked off with a heated debate session on sexual issues amongst high school pupils. These will culminate in the final debate session to take place on 15 February at the Germiston City Hall. The problem of high teenage pregnancy will also be addressed through a range of activities to take place at all regional health facilities, youth friendly services as well as schools with a high incidence of teenage pregnancy. Educational material including male and female condoms will be distributed at taxi ranks in Daveyton, Tsakane, Kwa-Tsa-Duza, Germiston, Natalspruit, Hospital, Vosloorus, Esangweni, Kempton Park and the Edenvale taxi rank.
