Bed utilisation rate of district hospitals in South African districts

There has been a steady increase over the last five years in the average bed utilisation rate (BUR) in district hospitals in South Africa from 61.1% to 66.9% in 2008/09.

Two provinces, Western Cape and Mpumalanga reached BURs of over 70% and five districts - City of Cape Town, Ukhahlamba, Central Karoo, Cape Winelands and Fezile Dabi - had BURs of over 80%. There was a two-fold difference between the highest BUR in the country in the City of Cape Town (WC) at 86.6%) and the lowest, Frances Baard (NC) at 42.6%.

The metro and ISRDP bed utilisation rates which differed significantly in 2003/04 at 73.2% and 57.6% respectively, have moved closer together in 2008/09 with the ISRDP bed utilisation rate increasing to 65.8% and the metro dropping to 67.5%. In 2008/09, the bed utilisation rate in priority sub-districts ranged from a high of 97.8% in Mbhashe sub-district (Amathole, EC) to a low of 44.9% in Nongoma sub-district (Zululand, KZN).
